Buys Passenger Networks, LLC
Airborne Digital Cabin Pioneers Link Networks With Platforms
(Irvine,
CA) April 5, 2002. Intheairnet, LLC agreed today to purchase substantially
all of
the assets of Passenger Networks, LLC, a manufacturer of airborne digital
platforms
including servers, satellite antenna systems, and cabin software applications
such as imap,
a moving map program for passengers. Passenger Networks has delivered
next generation
equipment for Connexion by Boeing programs, and corporate aviation aircraft
enabling
passengers to use office applications and follow their routes with moving
map.
Michael J.
Rogerson, Chairman & CEO of Intheairnet, explains the companies fit
as, "Our
industry reached an inflection point on September 11, 2001, and now you
have arguably
the two pioneers of the airborne digital cabin getting together instead
of being swallowed
up by one of the establishment biggies." Both companies are part
of the industry's effort
to couple cabin entertainment to the new technologies like broadband and
wireless. This
will enable airborne passengers to enjoy satellite TV, surf the web, and
keep track of
their email.
Intheairnet
has developed a digitally based architecture (patents pending) that changes
the traditional closed proprietary systems approach of airborne cabin
equipment
manufacturers into an open architecture that connects digital devices
of others, as well
as its own products. This means that now the best of ground technology
can be adapted
for applications in commercial, corporate and military aircraft.
Larry Girard,
formerly president of Passenger Networks, and new President & COO
of
Intheairnet observed, "This is terrific for our employees, and with
Intheairnet's strengths
in digital networks, manufacturing capabilities, and customer support,
it helps bring our
customers the world class performance they expect.
Intheairnet,
headquartered in Irvine, CA, manufactures airborne digital networks including
satellite antenna systems, servers, routers, receivers, wireless distribution,
and passenger
displays. Customers include aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and modification
centers
worldwide.
